Developing app to 3D scan a patient’s foot to fit custom orthotics

3D scanning technologies incorporated into many smartphones today have opened up a new era for shoe insole manufacturing and poses a significant disruption to orthotics manufacturers who typically rely on in-person consultations to obtain a model of a patient’s foot. Kintec Footlabs is one such custom orthotics and footwear company based in the Lower Mainland. To compete with the growing convenience and availability of at-home scanning technologies, Kintec sought to develop their own 3D scanning application to enable specialists to provide remote consultations. Digital Health Circle worked closely with Kintec to help formulate a plan to develop a 3D foot scanning application including needs identification, scoping, scheduling and resourcing the project. After discussion, it was decided that the first step in development was to build a prototype application that fit into Kintec’s existing workflow so that clinicians and clients could test it and provide feedback. Digital Health Circle further assisted this project by providing cost sharing to offset the costs of a local app developer selected by Kintec to complete this first phase of the project.
